Silver tin, black tin, or sticks: which one is yours?

Silver tin, black tin, or sticks: which one is yours?

We make matcha in several formats, and the question we get most is some version of: which one should I buy?

The honest answer is that it depends less on budget and more on how you drink matcha. How often you make it, where you make it, and whether you drink it on its own or with milk. Here's how to choose.

If you drink it on its own, and you want to taste the difference

Single Origin Matcha — black tin, 30 g

This comes from one valley and one harvest. Because it isn't blended, it has a deeper savory character and a longer finish. It's the one we'd pick for whisking with water and drinking slowly.

It's also the one that gets lost in milk. If you mostly make lattes, you don't need to spend the extra here.

Best for: traditional preparation, weekends, the mornings you're paying attention.

If matcha is part of your daily routine

Signature Matcha — silver tin, 30 g / 50 g / 100 g

This is our everyday ceremonial grade matcha: first harvest, shade-grown, and stone-ground. It works whisked on its own and holds its color and flavor in lattes, so it's the most versatile tin we make.

The three sizes serve different stages. At 2 g per cup:

  • 30 g makes about 15 cups. A good place to start.
  • 50 g makes about 25 cups. Roughly a month of weekday mornings.
  • 100 g makes about 50 cups. For people who already know it's a daily habit, and the best value per cup.

Best for: daily drinkers, lattes, and anyone unsure where to start.

If you're not always at home

Single Serve Sticks — 20 count

This is the same matcha, pre-portioned into sealed 2 g sticks. Each stick is fresh until you open it, and you don't need to measure anything.

Best for: work, travel, the gym bag, and trying Chaism before committing to a tin.

If you want a latte with no preparation

Matcha Latte

This is made to be stirred straight into milk, with no sifting and no whisking.

Best for: busy mornings, people new to matcha, and anyone who wants a café-style latte in thirty seconds.

And the tools

Whisk and Cup Set

You don't need a bamboo whisk to make good matcha. But if you're drinking it regularly, it's the single thing that most improves texture: finer foam, smoother body, no clumps.
